Fashionistas Level 11

Alexander McQueen (Lee Alexander McQueen), a renowned British fashion designer, was born on March 17, 1969, in Lewisham, London. Alexander left school at 16 to pursue his passion for art and fashion. He started as an apprentice at the Savile Row tailors Anderson & Sheppard, where he honed his skills in tailoring. He later worked for Gieves & Hawkes and theatrical costumiers Angels and Bermans. McQueen continued his education at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, where he earned a master's degree in fashion design in 1992. His graduation collection caught the attention of influential stylist Isabella Blow, who became his mentor and helped launch his career. In 1996, McQueen was appointed as the head designer at Givenchy, a French haute couture fashion house. He held this position until 2001, while simultaneously working on his own label, Alexander McQueen. His designs were known for often being dramatic, controversial, and mysterious. McQueen often challenged conventional beauty standards by using unconventional models and incorporating elements of darkness in his designs. Throughout his career, Alexander received numerous awards including 4 British Designer of the Year awards and a CFDA International Designer of the Year award. He was also appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2003. McQueen was one of the first designers who advocated for sustainability in fashion, using recycled materials and raising awareness about environmental issues through his work.
