Fashionistas Level 14

Jean-Paul Gaultier, a French fashion designer, was born on April 24, 1952, in Arcueil, France. Surprisingly, Gaultier never received formal fashion training; instead, he honed his skills by sending sketches to famous designers. At the age of 18, he was hired by Pierre Cardin in 1970, after sending him some of his sketches, which kick-started his career in the fashion industry. Gaultier launched his own fashion label in 1976 and gained recognition for his avant-garde and daring designs. He became known as the "enfant terrible" of French fashion. In the 1980s, he popularized the "man-skirt" and introduced the iconic cone bra, famously worn by Madonna during her 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour. Gaultier’s attire is recognized by the Breton stripe, which is a signature element in his designs. He managed to make a perfect mix of punk elements like leather, studs, and tartan into high fashion, blending rebellion with couture. Throughout his career, Gaultier has collaborated with various artists and brands, including Hermès, where he served as creative director from 2003 to 2010. He has also designed costumes for films and stage productions, such as Luc Besson's "The Fifth Element" and Pedro Almodóvar's "Kika." Gaultier is known for his support of LGBTQ+ rights and for challenging gender norms in fashion by creating androgynous and unisex clothing, such as skirts for men and corsets for both genders. Gaultier retired from the runway in 2020 but continues to work on special projects and collaborations. Received formal fashion training
