He moved to Paris at the age of 17 to pursue a career in fashion and quickly gained recognition for his talent in art. By the age of 21, Yves Saint Laurent was appointed as the lead designer of the prestigious House of Dior in 1955. This early success laid the foundation for his illustrious career in the fashion industry. Eventually he became the head designer after Dior's death in 1957, making him the youngest person to ever hold that position. By 1961, he already founded his own fashion house, Yves Saint Laurent (YSL), with his partner Pierre Bergé. YSL became notoriously famous for its innovative designs, such as the Mondrian dress, the tuxedo suit for women (Le Smoking), and the safari jacket. Saint Laurent was also the first designer to use ethnic models in his runway shows and for creating a famous ready-to-wear line, Rive Gauche. In Yves Saint Laurent's later years were marked by one fascinating aspect that dealt with his art collection. The thing is that he and his partner, Pierre Bergé, amassed an extraordinary collection of art, furniture, and decorative objects. When Saint Laurent's death, the entire collection was auctioned off, raising over $484 million. This set a record for the most valuable private collection ever sold.
