Halloween Level 2

The legend of Jack O'Lantern originates from Irish folklore, tracing back to a centuries-old tale about a man named Stingy Jack. According to the legend, Jack was a notorious trickster and miser. His reputation was so bad that even Devil himself was intrigued by Jack's notoriety. One night, the Devil approached Jack, but he quickly devised a plan to trick him. Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him, but when it came time to pay, Jack convinced the Devil to transform into a coin to settle the bill, promising to release him afterward. However, once the Devil obliged, Jack quickly pocketed the coin next to a silver cross in his purse, which prevented the Devil from changing back to his initial shape. Eventually, Jack freed the Devil, but only on the condition that he would not claim Jack's soul when he died. The Devil, having no choice, agreed. However, Jack tricked the Devil again! He convinced him to climb a tree to fetch a piece of fruit. While the Devil was all the way up on the tree, Jack carved a cross into the bark, trapping the Devil once more. Again, Jack made the Devil promise not to take his soul. When Jack eventually died, he was denied entry into Heaven, and he was also barred from Hell. Jack was condemned to wander the Earth for eternity. After the Devil tossed him an ember from the flames of Hell to help him see in the darkness, Jack placed the ember in a carved-out turnip and created a lantern. Over time, Jack of the Lantern was shortened to Jack O'Lantern. The tradition of carving scary faces into turnips and later pumpkins, lighting them with a candle, and placing them in windows or doorways was intended to ward off evil spirits like Jack, particularly on All Hallows' Eve, now known as Halloween. Originates from Irish folklore
