Landmarks Level 11

Mount Rushmore National Memorial was completed in 1941 after 14 years of construction. It was created to promote tourism in South Dakota and to honor the nation's history. The faces carved into the mountain are those of four U.S. presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. The idea for Mount Rushmore was conceived by South Dakota state historian Doane Robinson, who wanted to create an attraction that would draw tourists to the region. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum was hired to design and oversee the project. He was assisted by his son, Lincoln Borglum, and a team of about 400 workers. The sculptures measure about 60 feet (18 meters) in height from the top of the presidents' heads to their chin. The carving process involved removing approximately 450,000 tons of rock from the mountain. The faces were carefully selected based on their significance in American history. George Washington represents the country's founding, Thomas Jefferson symbolizes its expansion, Abraham Lincoln represents preservation, and Theodore Roosevelt signifies the nation's development. Mount Rushmore was originally intended to depict the presidents from head to waist, but due to funding limitations and the onset of World War II, the project was scaled back to focus on the heads only. The monument attracts over 2 million visitors annually, making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States. Attraction that would draw tourists to the region
