Marine wonders Level 3
Blobfish are a deep-sea fish that are known for their unique and unusual appearance. They have a gelatinous, blob-like body that lacks scales and a distinctive nose that resembles a human’s. They also have a wide mouth and beady eyes that give them a somewhat sad or unhappy expression. Blobfish have a unique adaptation to living in the extreme depths of the ocean. They live at depths of between 600 and 1,200 meters (1,969 and 3,937 feet) where the pressure is around 120 times greater than at the surface. To survive in this environment, the Blobfish has a gelatinous body that is slightly less dense than water, allowing it to float just above the ocean floor without expending much energy. Blobfish are rarely seen by humans, as their natural habitat is far too deep for most submarines or divers to reach. They are found in the waters off the coast of Australia, New Zealand, and Tasmania, where they feed on small invertebrates such as crabs and sea urchins. Despite their unusual appearance, Blobfish are not considered endangered and are not currently under threat by human activity. Have a gelatinous, blob-like body
