He married his first cousin, Margherita of Savoy, in 1868, and they had one son, Victor Emmanuel III, who succeeded him as king. Umberto's reign saw the expansion of Italy's colonial empire, including the acquisition of Eritrea and Somalia. He was known as "Umberto the Good" due to his charitable works and efforts to improve the living conditions of the working class.
