Royals in the XIX Level 2

Leopold I of Belgium, born on December 16, 1790, and died on December 10, 1865, was the first King of the Belgians, reigning from 1831 to 1865. Leopold was born as Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld in Coburg, Germany. He was the youngest son of Duke Francis Frederick of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld and Countess Augusta Reuss of Ebersdorf. The first King of Belgium began his military career in the Russian army, fighting against Napoleon in the Napoleonic Wars. He later served in the British army, where he was promoted to the rank of major-general. In 1816, Leopold married Princess Charlotte of Wales, the only child of the British King George IV. Unfortunately, Charlotte died in childbirth in 1817, leaving Leopold without an heir. In 1830, Belgium declared its independence from the Netherlands. The Belgian National Congress chose Leopold as their king, and he accepted the throne on July 21, 1831, becoming King Leopold I of Belgium. Leopold's reign was marked by efforts to strengthen and modernize Belgium. He focused on infrastructure, education, and economic development. He also played a key role in maintaining Belgium's neutrality during European conflicts. Leopold I laid the groundwork for Belgium's colonial empire by supporting his son's efforts to establish the Congo Free State, which later became the Belgian Congo. In 1832, Leopold married Louise-Marie of Orléans, daughter of King Louis-Philippe of France. They had four children, including Leopold II, who succeeded him as king.
