George V of Hanover (1819-1878) was the last king of Hanover, reigning from 1851 to 1866. George V was a member of the House of Hanover, a German royal dynasty. He was the only son of Ernest Augustus, King of Hanover, and his wife, Frederica of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Born with poor eyesight, George V eventually became completely blind by the age of 27 due to retinal detachment. In 1843, George V married Marie of Saxe-Altenburg, and they had three children: Ernest Augustus, Frederica, and Marie. George V ascended to the throne in 1851 after his father's death. His reign was marked by a strong commitment to constitutionalism and a desire to maintain Hanover's independence. In 1866, George V sided with Austria during the Austro-Prussian War. Unfortunately, Hanover was defeated by Prussia, and George V was dethroned. After his dethronement, George V went into exile in Austria, where he lived for the rest of his life. He never abdicated, considering himself the rightful king of Hanover until his death in 1878.
