George V of Hanover (1819-1878) was the last king of Hanover, reigning from 1851 to 1866. George V was a member of the House of Hanover, a German royal dynasty. He was the only son of Ernest Augustus, King of Hanover, and his wife, Frederica of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Born with poor eyesight, George V eventually became completely blind by the age of 27 due to retinal detachment. In 1843, George V married Marie of Saxe-Altenburg, and they had three children: Ernest Augustus, Frederica, and Marie. George V ascended to the throne in 1851 after his father's death. His reign was marked by a strong commitment to constitutionalism and a desire to maintain Hanover's independence. In 1866, George V sided with Austria during the Austro-Prussian War. Unfortunately, Hanover was defeated by Prussia, and George V was dethroned. After his dethronement, George V went into exile in Austria, where he lived for the rest of his life. He never abdicated, considering himself the rightful king of Hanover until his death in 1878. George V's descendants include the current British royal family, as his granddaughter, Princess Victoria Louise, married the future German Emperor Wilhelm II. Was the last king of Hanover, reigning
