Pedro V of Portugal, also known as Pedro de Alcântara Maria Fernando Miguel Rafael Gonzaga Xavier João António Leopoldo Víctor Francisco de Assis Júlio Amélio de Saxe-Coburgo-Gota e Bragança, was born on September 16, 1837, and died on November 11, 1861. He was the 31st King of Portugal and the Algarves, reigning from 1853 until his untimely death at the age of 24. Pedro V was the eldest son of Queen Maria II and her consort, King Fernando II. He was a member of the House of Braganza, the most prominent royal house in Portugal's history. Pedro V received a comprehensive education, studying various subjects such as politics, history, and languages. He was fluent in Portuguese, French, German, and English. Pedro V became king at the age of 16, following the death of his mother, Queen Maria II, on November 15, 1853. In 1858, Pedro V married Princess Stephanie of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, a German noblewoman. Unfortunately, their marriage was short-lived, as Stephanie died of diphtheria in 1859. Pedro V was a progressive ruler who sought to modernize Portugal. He invested in infrastructure, such as railways and telegraph lines, and promoted education and culture. He also supported the abolition of slavery in Portuguese colonies. In 1857, a yellow fever epidemic struck Lisbon, claiming thousands of lives. Pedro V and his wife, Stephanie, personally visited hospitals and provided aid to the sick, earning them the admiration of the Portuguese people. King of Portugal and the Algarves
