Sports records Level 6
Marita Koch is a former East German sprinter who is widely regarded as one of the greatest female athletes in track and field history. Marita Koch's achievements on the track, including her world records and dominance in the 400 meters, have solidified her status as one of the greatest female sprinters in history. Koch holds the world record for the women's 400 meters, which she set on October 6, 1985, with a time of 47.60 seconds. This record has stood for over three decades and remains unbroken. Koch set multiple world records throughout her career. In addition to the 400 meters, she also held the world records for the women's 200 meters (21.71 seconds) and the 4x400 meters relay. Despite facing a boycott by several countries in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Koch still won a silver medal in the 400 meters. She was unable to compete in the Olympics prior to 1980 due to East Germany's boycott of the Games. Koch's success was achieved during the period when East Germany's state-sponsored doping program was prevalent. While there have been allegations and suspicions about her doping involvement, Koch has never tested positive for banned substances. Koch was named the Female World Athlete of the Year in 1985 and was honored as the "Sprinter of the Decade" for the 1980s by Track & Field News. Koch also excelled in indoor competitions. She set multiple indoor world records in events like the 200 meters, 400 meters, and 4x400 meters relay. Her indoor world record in the 400 meters stood for 30 years. Former East German sprinter
