World in the 80's Level 5

The 80s were highlighted by the disaster that happened when the Space Shuttle Challenger (STS-51-L) exploded shortly after launch on January 28, 1986. Tragically, the space shuttle exploded 73 seconds after liftoff, resulting in the loss of all crew members. The Challenger crew members were seven astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger including Francis R. Scobee, a Commander and an experienced pilot and astronaut. The other crew member was Michael J. Smith, a skilled pilot, responsible for assisting Scobee in controlling the shuttle. Ronald McNair, an accomplished physicist and astronaut, responsible for operating the shuttle's robotic arm and conducting experiments. Ellison Onizuka, an aerospace engineer and astronaut, responsible for satellite deployment and experiments. Judith Resnik, an electrical engineer and astronaut, responsible for operating the shuttle's robotic arm and conducting experiments. Gregory Jarvis, an engineer and astronaut, responsible for conducting experiments on the effects of weightlessness on fluids. Christa McAuliffe was a schoolteacher and the first private citizen selected to fly in space. The disaster led to a 32-month suspension of the Space Shuttle program, a thorough investigation by the Rogers Commission, and significant changes in NASA's management, safety procedures, and shuttle design. The tragedy also emphasized the importance of risk assessment and communication in space missions. Highlighted by the disaster that happened
