World in the 80's Level 7
The 1980s were marked by the end of apartheid in South Africa. This resulted from increased internal and international pressure like protests, sanctions, and diplomatic isolation that led to negotiations between the ruling National Party and anti-apartheid groups, including the African National Congress (ANC). The National Party, under pressure from international sanctions and internal unrest, began to recognize the need for change. President P.W. Botha introduced some reforms, but it was his successor, F.W. de Klerk, who accelerated the process. De Klerk lifted the ban on the ANC and other opposition groups, released political prisoners, including Nelson Mandela, and initiated negotiations for a new constitution. The ANC, along with other anti-apartheid groups, played a crucial role in raising awareness about the injustices of apartheid, both domestically and internationally. They organized protests, strikes, and armed resistance, which put pressure on the government to change. The ANC also engaged in negotiations with the National Party, leading to a peaceful transition to a democratic South Africa. The release of Nelson Mandela, a key anti-apartheid leader, from prison in 1990, paved the way for multi-racial negotiations. In 1994, South Africa held its first democratic elections, where Nelson Mandela was elected as the country's first black president. The end of apartheid in South Africa
