Ferdinand I of Bulgaria, also known as Tsar Ferdinand I, was born on February 26, 1861, and ruled Bulgaria from 1887 to 1918. Ferdinand was a member of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha-Koháry, a German princely family. He was elected as the Knyaz (prince) of Bulgaria after the abdication of Prince Alexander I. Ferdinand's election was controversial, as Russia, which had a significant influence in the region, did not approve of his appointment. However, he managed to gain recognition from the European powers in 1896. During his reign, Ferdinand focused on modernizing Bulgaria and strengthening its economy, military, and infrastructure. He also pursued a policy of territorial expansion, aiming to unite all ethnic Bulgarians under one state. Ferdinand played a significant role in the Balkan Wars (1912-1913), where Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, and Montenegro fought against the Ottoman Empire. Bulgaria gained territory in the First Balkan War but lost some of it in the Second Balkan War due to conflicts with its former allies. In 1908, Ferdinand declared Bulgaria's independence from the Ottoman Empire and proclaimed himself Tsar, which further strained relations with Russia. Ferdinand's ambitions led Bulgaria to join the Central Powers in World War I. However, the country suffered heavy losses, and public opinion turned against him. After Bulgaria's defeat in World War I, Ferdinand abdicated in favor of his son, Boris III, on October 3, 1918. He spent the rest of his life in exile, mainly in Germany, and passed away on September 10, 1948. Ferdinand was a member of the House
