In 1895, the world's first large-scale hydroelectric power plant, the Edward Dean Adams Power Plant, began operating at Niagara Falls, harnessing the falls' energy for electricity. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, conservationists like Frederick Law Olmsted campaigned to protect the falls from industrialization.
