Waterfalls Level 2

Niagara Falls, located on the border of Ontario, Canada, and New York, USA, is a group of three waterfalls: Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. Niagara Falls was formed around 12,000 years ago, at the end of the last Ice Age, when melting glaciers formed the Great Lakes, and water from Lake Erie flowed to Lake Ontario through the Niagara River. The area was inhabited by indigenous peoples for thousands of years. The name "Niagara" comes from the Iroquois word "Onguiaahra," meaning "The Strait." French explorer Samuel de Champlain visited the area in 1604, but the first detailed description of the falls was by Father Louis Hennepin in 1678. By the early 19th century, Niagara Falls became a popular tourist destination. The first suspension bridge for pedestrians was built in 1848, and the first railway suspension bridge in 1855. In 1895, the world's first large-scale hydroelectric power plant, the Edward Dean Adams Power Plant, began operating at Niagara Falls, harnessing the falls' energy for electricity. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, conservationists like Frederick Law Olmsted campaigned to protect the falls from industrialization. This led to the creation of the Niagara Reservation State Park in 1885, America's oldest state park. Located on the border of Ontario
